In August 2021, newborn Ava died in the Alachua County Jail after her mother’s pleas for medical care went ignored. “Ava’s Law” would require judges to provide pregnant women an opportunity to defer sentencing until after delivery, while allowing the judge to order probation-like terms of release. The bill would also ensure women held in jail longer than 72 hours can have access to pregnancy tests.
