MIAMI, FL — Fifty-two years ago, Roe v. Wade guaranteed the constitutional right to abortion—a promise of dignity, bodily autonomy, and freedom. Today, Floridians are demanding action to reinstate those same rights as Florida’s dangerous abortion ban has stripped away access to care, jeopardized lives, and trampled on the democratic will of the people. The urgency to act has never been greater.
In the 2024 election, more than 57% of Floridians voted in favor of Amendment 4 to restore reproductive freedom in the state—a clear mandate from the people. While this fell just shy of what was needed to amend Florida’s constitution, it succeeded in proving to our elected officials that the vast majority of Floridians do not want the government interfering in our reproductive freedom. We call upon our elected officials to enact the will of the people and end Florida’s extreme and dangerous near-total abortion ban. Yet, instead of heeding this mandate, the state government interfered in the election to block what should have been a victory for millions, leaving Floridians without the healthcare protections they fought for.
“The anniversary of Roe v. Wade is more than a historical marker; it’s a call to action,” said Bacardi Jackson, Executive Director of the ACLU of Florida. “Floridians overwhelmingly voted to protect their right to reproductive healthcare. Instead, we were met with interference, political gamesmanship, and a complete disregard for democracy. We can’t wait—we must repeal these bans and restore our rights now.”
Florida’s abortion ban places countless lives at risk, making it difficult—if not impossible—for people to access essential healthcare. Beyond the immediate harm, it sends a chilling message: political power can override personal freedom and politicians, not people, get to decide what happens in private, life-altering moments.
“This is urgent. Every day that passes under this government ban is another day in which Floridians are forced to live in fear and face great risks, and suffering,” Jackson added. “To protect lives, restore dignity, and ensure that every person has the freedom to make deeply personal healthcare decisions without interference, we cannot afford to wait any longer.”
On this anniversary, advocates are not just reflecting on the past—they’re mobilizing for the future. Events are being organized across the state to demand that Florida’s leaders repeal the abortion ban immediately. Advocates are clear: the fight is far from over, and the will of the people cannot be ignored.
“The majority has spoken,” said Jackson. “Floridians want reproductive freedom, and they deserve leaders who will honor that. We will not stop until this harmful law is overturned, and reproductive justice becomes a reality for everyone in this state.”
The ACLU of Florida and its partners will continue to stand beside impacted people who are leading the fight, mobilizing supporters, providing legal support, and pushing for urgent legislative action. Together, Floridians can send a resounding message: reproductive freedom is not up for debate—it’s a right that must be restored.
