MIAMI – The Florida Immigrant Coalition joins the ACLU of Florida in supporting the U.S. Department of Justice’s suit against the State of Arizona in opposition to the controversial SB 1070 law. Many critics of SB 1070 have decried the law as anti-American and anti-immigrant. They have also rejected copycat measures currently being attempted in the state of Florida by conservative politicians, including State Attorney General Bill McCollum.
“We find it unfortunate that at the same time the U.S. Attorney General has decided to uphold the constitution, civil rights, and the fair treatment of all people, the attorney general of our own state, that has benefited so much from immigrants, is trying to destroy the constitution and any conception of civil rights in this state by supporting Arizona-like legislation in Florida,” said Maria Rodriguez, Executive Director of the Florida Immigrant Coalition.
"This suit is definitely one step in the right direction," said Courtenay Strickland, ACLU of Florida Director of Public Policy. "The news in Florida is definitely one step back, but Florida’s attorney general and state lawmakers should recognize the Obama administration’s lawsuit for what it is: a warning to other states not to follow Arizona’s shameful lead by passing extreme and un-American laws."
The ACLU and a coalition of civil rights groups are currently suing the State of Arizona in court in a class action challenge to SB 1070. National organizations that have partnered with the ACLU in the lawsuit challenging the Arizona law include the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), National Immigration Law Center (NILC), Asian Pacific American Legal Center, ACLU of Arizona, National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), among others.
Maria Rodriguez concluded her statement by saying, "Attorney General Holder, we congratulate you and support any attempt to preserve human rights in Arizona. Attorney General McCollum, shame on you. Florida is not Arizona. Stop trying to make it that way."

Defensores de Migrantes en la Florida Apoyan la Demanda del Gobierno Federal Contra la Ley de Arizona SB1070: Un Empujón de Rechazo a Leyes Similares en Otros Estados
MIAMI – La Coalición de Inmigrantes de la Florida se sumó a la Unión Americana de Libertades Civiles de la Florida (ACLU por sus siglas en inglés), para apoyar la demanda del Departamento de Justicia de Estados Unidos contra el Estado de Arizona en oposición a la controversial Ley SB 1070. Muchos críticos de la Ley SB1070 han denunciado que la es anti-estadounidense y anti-inmigrante. Han rechazado también el intento de algunos políticos conservadores de copiar esta ley en el Estado de la Florida, entre quienes se encuentra el Procurador General del Estado, Bill McCollum.
“Creemos que es infortunado que al mismo tiempo el Procurador General de Estados Unidos haya decidido defender la Constitución, los derechos civiles y el trato justo a todas las personas, mientras que el Procurador General de nuestro propio estado, quien se ha beneficiado tanto de los inmigrantes, esté tratando de destruir la Constitución y cualquier concepto de derechos civiles en este estado al apoyar leyes similares a la de Arizona en la legislatura de la Florida”, expresó María Rodríguez, Directora Ejecutiva de la Coalición de Inmigrantes de la Florida.
“Esta demanda es definitivamente un paso en la dirección correcta” comenta Courtenay Strickland, Directora de Políticas Públicas del ACLU de la Florida. “Las noticias de la Florida son definitivamente un paso hacia atrás, pero el Procurador General de la Florida y los legisladores estatales deberían reconocer la demanda impuesta por la administración de Obama como lo que es: una señal de advertencia a otros Estados para que no sigan los pasos vergonzosos de Arizona al pasar leyes extremas y anti-americanas.”

María Rodríguez concluyó su declaración diciendo, “Procurador General: lo felicitamos y apoyamos cualquier intento de preservar los derechos humanos en Arizona. Procurador General McCollum: qué vergüenza. La Florida no es Arizona. Deje de intentar cambiarla.”
