Abortion Access in Florida

Florida now has an extreme, near-total abortion ban in effect.

Everyone should be able to get the health care they need—without politicians interfering in their medical decisions. The vast majority of Floridians believe abortion should be legal. Unfortunately, Florida’s Governor and legislature disagree with Floridians and have enacted a dangerous near-total abortion ban in Florida, that went into effect on May 1, 2024.

The overwhelming majority of Floridians think private medical decisions should be left to pregnant patients in consultation with their doctors. Florida’s extreme abortion ban is dangerous and unfair.

This extreme abortion ban criminalizes abortion before many people even realize they are pregnant. The ACLU of Florida will never stop fighting for our freedom to make personal medical decisions without government interference.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • This near-total abortion ban criminalizes abortion before many people even realize they are pregnant, and often before pregnancies can be detected on an ultrasound.
  • It has no real exceptions for rape, incest, or the health of the patient.
  • The ban threatens patient's health and lives.
  • It forces doctors to wait until their patient is on the brink of death before legally being able to provide care.
