On Tuesday, April 12, join us for the next conversation in our racial justice series entitled, "Racial Disparities in the Judicial System in Florida" with Gilbert King, Pulitzer Prize winning author.
The integrity of the state’s judicial system relies on correcting the gross injustices of the past. During the conversation, Gilbert King will discuss the impact the school-to-prison pipeline and America's over-reliance on mass incarceration has on Black communities in Florida, and how these injustices are rooted in centuries of systemic racism and discrimination.
Gilbert King is the author of three books, most recently, "Beneath a Ruthless Sun." His previous book, Devil in the Grove, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction in 2013. A New York Times bestseller, the book was also named runner-up for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize for nonfiction and was a finalist for both the Chautauqua Prize and the Edgar Award. King has written about race, civil rights, and the death penalty for the New York Times, the Washington Post, and The Atlantic. In 2018, he was awarded the Talbot “Sandy” D’Alemberte Commitment to Justice Award from the Innocence Project of Florida. King was also a 2019-2020 fellow at The New York Public Library’s Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.
